What’s To Become Of Gurney Drive

Gurney Drive - the hot spot in Penang, the tourist belt. Almost everybody who comes to Penang will end up here one way or another. Hawker foods, shopping mall, 4-5 star hotels, luxury condominiums and strings of cafes and restaurants. The pride of Penang.  And that’s all about Gurney Drive now.

Once where waves pound on the retaining walls and sandy beaches for swimming and fishing are all things of the past. What’s left of it now is mud, mud and more mud! Read here: PENANG - The Pearl Of The Orient Or Is It “The Mud Of The Orient?”

For some reasons, we have not been to Gurney Drive since the new hawker centre was completed. My wife\’s decision depended on whether it was the last Sunday of the month when there is Little Penang Street Market, her wish to look at any good bargains at the antique shops in Chulia Street and/or her crave for Penang or Siamese laksa!

But our usual complaint seems to be the difficulty in finding the car park attendant when you need to pay! We do not have this problem with illegal jaga kereta and how we wish they carry out their work like those in Penang! The parking charges of 30 or 40 sen per half hour is reasonable but being from out of town, we are usually in a hurry to go back. For the sake of paying, do we waste time and petrol going round looking for them? We had even paid a shop assistant nearby who promised to pay for us. If the local authorities were to be strict with going after those who did not pay those meagre sums, then it would put off local tourists if my feeling on this matter is anything to go by.

I hope Penang local government would revamp the parking system once and for all. Please think of the visitors\’ convenience and they would be grateful and come back again and again.

Hi Ong. I agree with you on the difficulty in finding the car park attendants in Pg. Yes. it’ s very frustrating especially when you are in a hurry to go somewhere or do something. Some attendant will write a ticket for you and then disappeared on their bike to God knows where. Another thing is you have to look at the time when you park and when you leave. These attendants will overcharged you by 1/2 hour or an hour for their own pocket money. I know its just 30 or 40 sen but then we will encourage them to prey on others who are not bothered.
