THE EVE OF PERMATANG PAUH BY-ELECTION

I left Penang Island at around 7.30pm. I thought it would be a good idea if have my dinner first before we head for the Anwar Ibrahim Ceramah, knowing it’s going to be a long night. I had my dinner at Chai Leng Park and as I drove out of Chai Leng Park, I saw a convoy of FRU trucks parked along the Jalan Baru main road. I estimated atleast 15 or more trucks there (minus the FRU officers, no idea where they are)

When I reached the site around 8.40pm, there were large crowds heading towards the site’s entrance. I had to drive about 200 meters away to an parking space mend by PKR workers. They were so polite and find me a good spot just near the main road.

As I entered the site I could feel some tiny raindrops beginning to fall. I quickly went back to my car to get my umbrella. Thank God I did that. Cause just after that it started to drizzle. But then that did not stop the people from coming. For every raindrop, there is one more person coming to the ceramah.

It was like a festival, or should I say like “pasar malam,” with stalls set up along the site, selling drinks and snacks to T-shirts of PKR and PAS and CDs. You can even get fresh dates there!

When I reached the site, I could not get through, it was all packed. So have to be contented standing near one of the stalls. People kept pouring in and have to pushed their way through. Now the rain starts to pour and you can see a sea of umbrellas in front of you. Rain or no rain, the people stayed put.

I’m so impressed by the turn-out. Some estimated that they were 10,000, some 50,000 to 60,000, and some as low as 3,000. But I doubt the person who estimated 3,000 (must have flunked in maths) I can safely estimate that there were about 20,000 to 30,000, but the I could be wrong. Anyway, it’s hard to estimate as I can’t get the whole picture of the crowd. But one thing si for sure, it was humongous! I think this the second beiggest ceramah next to the DAP ceramah at Han Chiang School on 7th March 2008.

Now to be honest, I’m not well-versed in BM. So most of the time, I hardly understand much. The reason I was there is to witness and be part of the ceramah. I want to see for myself what I have read about the support given to Anwar. And I saw it. And from what I saw, I am sure Anwar will win with a landslide victory with a huge majority. And I read that Khairy was having a ceramah elsewhere with only 150 people there and Najib in another ceramah with 400 people. Well, some people say, you can’t judge the results of the BY-Election from the estimation of the crowd. But then look what happened at the DAP ceramah at Han Chiang. The next day, Pakatan Rakyat took over Penang.

It was a succesful campaign for Pakatan Rakyat. Penang’s CM Lim Guan Eng was there, so were Lim Kit Siang, Wan Azizah, Saifuddin Nasution, Jeff Ooi, Chow Kon Yeow, Nurul, Azmin Ali, Chong Eng and a strings of other VIPs. And of course the VVIP, the man of the moment - Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim. And the crowd were just fantastic.

But apart from all these, I think the groundwork and logistic of the ceramah was not well organised. For a start, the sound system was really bad. Most people around me complaint that they could not hear clearly or can’t hear at all. They should have invested in a good sound system, after all the people came to listen. And what is the point if they can’t hear a thing. And the video screen was as bad. Ans so was the stage. Well, I hope it was because they never anticipate such a large crowd.
