Women face travel curbs over drug trafficking fears

Women travelling abroad on their own may need letters from their parents or employers in a bid to stop them becoming ‘mules’ for international drug syndicates.

The proposal comes as 119 Malaysians, 90 per cent of whom are women, have been imprisoned worldwide on drug-related charges with the majority believed to have been duped into transporting drugs, the New Sunday Times reported.

“I have submitted this proposal to the cabinet and both the Foreign and Home Ministries feel this is necessary,” foreign minister Rais Yatim told the paper.

“Many of these women (who travel alone) leave the country on the pretext of work or attending courses and seminars,” he added.

“With this declaration, we will know for sure where and for what she is travelling overseas.” Malaysiakini

I have read many absurd and idoicy proposals by ministers but this one beats them all. I mean proposing that woman travelling on her own needs to get a consent from her family. I think the minister needs to do more homework before even thinking about it, let alone to propose it to the cabinet. This is a real joke. Even the foreign news have reported about it; BBC News.  We are a laughing stock to the world now!

Are we heading towards Talibanisation? Whatever happen to women’s rights?

Will this stop them becoming ‘mules’ for the international drug syndicates? Hey, if they have the intention of being a ‘mule,’ they will get the ‘consent’ somehow. And what would happen to the family members if they do give the consent? Will they be charged for abetting in the crime if the woman is caught trafficking drugs? In a way, they have approved of her activities! And with that consent, how will you know they are not acting as ‘mules?’ They could just fly to Thailand for a holiday, then get their contacts there and fly to wherever. What is to stop them?

And how do you define “woman traveling alone?” What if two women are travelling together, do both of them needs to get consent from their families? After all they are not travelling alone - they are travelling together! And both could be the ‘mules’ for the syndicate. So Azalina, Rafidah, Rosmah, Jeanne has to get consent from their familes or employers even if they are travelling aboard on holidays or business? This is interesting. Imagine Azalina, who is a minister, have to get consent from her family or Badawi - her employer! Or Jeanne getting consent from Badawi, or Rosmah getting consent from Najib! So any of them could be a ‘mule’ for the syndicates!

And by the way, how do we stop women from becoming prostitutes? They need to get consent from the family members, when they are go shopping with friends or going to a movie? How do we stop the menace of Mat Rempits? Take away their licence? They are not worried anyway, many of them are riding without a licence. So getting a consent from the family or employer will help curb women being used by drugs syndicates?

This is most ridiculous, ludicrous, preposterous, absurd, silly, outlandish, outrageous, bizarre, unreasonable, incredible, nonsensical proposal ever.

But then I can be wrong, other ministers might come out with even more ridiculous, ludicrous, preposterous, absurd, silly, outlandish, outrageous, bizarre, unreasonable, incredible, nonsensical proposal.
